A Rome, Chez Garcia, Libraire.

An de Grace 1750.

14x9,5 cm. 118 pp.

Extreamly rare grimoire. This is the only generally known edition. It is probaly not from 1750 as the title page indicates, but the edition printed by Blocquel around 1840 [Caillet 11094].

1/2 calf binding, probaly the original, with richly decorated spine. The binding is in all around good condition. It has some wear and bumps. The spine title is missing. The interior is also in overall good condition. There are some small stains and very small lacks of paper (in the margins only). 2 talismans are colored in red (see the photographs) which might have been done by someone else at a later date.

Caution: The book states that there are 45 talismans, but I cannot locate more that 44 in the book. Biblioteca Esoterica 5089 also identifies only 44, so my guess is that it only has 44. If not it might lack some pages?

All text is in french.

--

The myth of the book has it that it was delivered to Toscraec the magician in the 17th century as a very old manuscript found in the tomb of Solomon written in an unknown language, the appearance of an angel helped him to translate the manuscript into Hebrew. Then it was translated from Hebrew into french by the magus Iroe Grego.

A. E. Waite states that the Magie Noire is a version of the Key of Solomon (C.M, p. 100). What is interesting is that the Magie Noire contains the darker parts of the Key of Solomon which Mathers did not include in his english translation, but which 'should undoubtedly be regarded as an integral portion of the original work' as Waite writes. (C.M. p. 100).
