WIERUS [WEYER, Johann.]
De praestigiis daemonum, & incantationibus ac veneficiis libri sex, postrema editione sexta aucti & recogniti. Accessit liber apologeticus et pseudomonarchia daemonum. Cum rerum ac verborum copioso indice.
Ex Officina Oporiniana,, Basilae, 1583. 4to. 934,pp. (34) index, (3). Original full vellum binding. Handwritten title on spine and first board. Some worming to front and back end pages which only effects the last page of the index with a tiny hole. Very Good condition! Includes a Portrait of Wier.
This 1583 edition is the only one to be in large format together with the 1577; it is considered to be the most complete and best edition, since it contains the famous Pseudomonarchia Daemonum that was a base for numerous later salomonic grimoires, such as the Lemegeton.
(Coumont, W21.6)
Johannes Wierus was a disciple of Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa, the greatest magician and occultist of the Renaissance. Wierus' book is probably one of the rarest and most important manuals on demonology ever published, because unlike other works on witchcraft written by inquisitors or witch hunters, this book was written by a well versed and clear minded Catholic/occultist who in many ways defended the witches.
Wierus condemned the
superstitions contained in the 'Malleus Maleficarum', establishing a clear
boundary between true Sorcery and the mere illusions of mentally ill women.
As the first book ever to defend witches it was almost immediately sentenced
to fire by the inquisition and is now very rare, especially in such a good
condition as this!
