Del Rio - Investigations Into Magic:

Magicarum Disquisitionum Tomus Secundus in Quo Agitur De Maleficio ...Volume II only by Martin Del Rio

Joannis Albini, Moguntiae, 1600. Vellum. Book Condition: Good. First Edition. 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall. The first edition of this the second volume (Volume I was published in 1599). Text in Latin with some Greek. Bound in full contemporary vellum now rather soiled and crinkled. Old handwritten title to spine. Very tiny old shelf label to head of spine. Some wear, but vellum intact. Couple of old ink names to title page. (32), 448, 469-500, 481-644, (68), two blanks. Collates complete despite pagination jump. Folding table opposite page 178 with small handling tear, but otherwise tidy. Some occasional light waterstaining to margins. One quire misfolded (R). A very scarce work even as an odd volume!

Del Rio's Disquisitionum Magicarum was THE most influential, comprehensive and important 17th century manual on witch-hunting and magic. It embraces theoretical demonology to practical torture.

This second volume deals especially with the various uses to which the diffrent types of magic may be and indeed are all often put, whereas the First volume deals with the diffrent types of magic on a theoretical level and the final third volume deals with how to deal with people who use magic!

This is the only first edition of Del Rio we have ever seen - very rare and sought after!
