S. Liddell MacGregor Mathers
The Key of Solomon the King (Clavicula Salomonis) Now First Translated and Edited From Ancient MSS. in the British Museum by S. Liddell MacGregor Mathers Author of “The Kabbalah Unveiled”, “The Tarot”, &c. With Plates. London: Kegan Paul, 1909. [Second Edition]
Here we have one of the most influential magical texts or Grimoires translated by one of the most influential magicians of the occult revival in the 19th century and co-founder of the Hermetic Order of The Golden Dawn.
-
In original binding. The binding has quite a lot of wear and the spine is very fragile which is common to both the first and second edition of this work (if you should be lucky enough to ever see more than one copy of each). The spine has some cracks and a piece of the bottom is missing, but has been restored by an amatur. The binding is, however firm and holding nicely. The text is generally clean with some occational foxing. Some of the pages with the diagrams are loosely inserted since they probaly were used in actual rituals. Top edge gilt.
-
The Key of Solomon the King is the greatest of the medieval grimoires, its influence being seen in other works such as the Grimorium Verum or the Lemegeton (Goetia). Mathers used seven different manuscripts in the collection of the British Museum, to create this first ever translation into English. He was assisted by Dr. W. Wynn Westcott, a co-founder of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, along with Mathers and Dr. Robert Woodman.
-
This is the first time we see the second edition which is very rare. It is this edition which is commonly used when reprinted.
